After our time in Milan, we boarded a morning train from Milano Centrale and headed north to Lake Como. In a little over an hour we were stepping off at Varenna‑Esino, ready to explore the lake’s most charming towns.

Varenna
Our first stop was Varenna, a picturesque village built into the steep hillside. Narrow alleys wound down to the lakefront, where colourful houses lined the shore and fishing boats bobbed in the water.

We strolled along the Passeggiata degli Innamorati—the Lovers’ Walk—enjoying views across the lake and the sound of water lapping against the rocks.

Lunch in a lakeside café meant fresh pasta and a glass of local white wine, with swans gliding by as we ate.

After lunch we climbed up to Castello di Vezio, a medieval fortress perched above Varenna. From its ramparts we had sweeping views of the lake’s three branches and the surrounding mountains.

Bellagio
A short ferry ride brought us to Bellagio, known as the “Pearl of the Lake.” The town sits at the tip of the peninsula that divides Lake Como into its eastern and western arms.

We wandered up and down Bellagio’s steep stone staircases, popping into boutiques and gelato shops. The streets were lined with flowers even in late season.

Villa Melzi’s gardens provided a tranquil escape. We followed pathways through camellia trees and past statues, pausing to admire the view back toward the snow‑dusted Alps.

A ferry ride to our next destination gave us time to sit on deck and watch the sun sparkle on the lake’s surface.

Menaggio
Menaggio greeted us with a broad lakeside promenade and a more relaxed vibe. Children played in the piazza and locals chatted on benches overlooking the water.

We explored the old town’s cobbled streets and stopped for an afternoon coffee in a shaded square. The pastel buildings and shuttered windows made every corner feel like a postcard.

In Menaggio we rented bicycles for a quick ride along the lake’s shoreline. The flat path offered easy pedaling and constant views of the surrounding peaks.

Reflections
As the day drew to a close, we caught a ferry back to Varenna and the train to Milan. The reflections of mountains and villages on the water lingered in our minds long after the sun set.

Lake Como’s blend of dramatic scenery, charming villages and leisurely ferry rides made for a perfect day trip. Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio each offered their own unique atmosphere, and travelling between them by boat felt like a mini‑adventure in itself.

We returned to Milan that evening tired but happy, already planning our next visit to this magical lake.
