Schönbrunn Palace – Vienna, Austria

After the grandeur of central Vienna, we spent a full day exploring the imperial world of Schönbrunn Palace. From the lavish interiors once walked by emperors to the sprawling gardens, greenhouses, and even a zoo, the grounds are massive and mesmerizing. We lucked out with crisp blue skies, perfect for photos and plenty of wandering.

A regal first look: the palace’s dramatic facade under a winter blue sky.

The long promenade from the palace steps up to the Gloriette in the distance – the scale is immense.

Portraits of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi), still watching over the halls.

The imperial dining room, set as if royalty were due any moment.

The famous Great Gallery – chandeliers, frescoed ceilings, and golden rococo walls.

A wider view of the gallery’s grandeur – light pouring in from towering windows.

The size of the gardens cannot be overstated. It’s a 10 minute walk from the palace to the on-site zoo.

Looking back at the full rear facade – the sheer width is overwhelming.

Painted skies and carefully manicured grounds, leading back to the Gloriette.

A peek inside the Christmas market with stalls for food, warm drinks, and handcrafts.

One of the palace greenhouses in glowing green steel and glass – still active today.

A peaceful stroll in the Japanese Garden area just behind the palm house.

A resident of Tiergarten Schönbrunn – the world’s oldest zoo, right on palace grounds.

Dome and steel curves of the palm house from a quieter garden view.

A happy moment in the crisp winter sun, with the palace gardens stretching behind us.

The super walkable, bite sized zoo had plenty of opportunities for children of all ages to interact with the fun sculptures around the grounds.
